Italian Courses

ҹɫÊÓÆµ offers undergraduate credit courses as well as non-credit classes in the study of the Italian language. Advanced students travel abroad to further their studies at universities in Italy.ÌýIf you are a beginner, try a non-credit course where you progress at your own pace.

SUMMER 2025 NON-CREDIT ENRICHMENT COURSES

Courses will start the week of May 18th and will end on August 8th. Classes are held once a week for two hours (6 - 8 PM).

PLEASE NOTE: Italian Level I is being treated as a hybrid course for Summer 2025. Complete beginners are welcome, as well as students who would like more practice before moving into Level II. In addition, the class will be held twice a week from 6 to 8PM (Wednesdays and Fridays) and end June 27th per the professor's availability.

Level I - Lambert, Wednesdays and Fridays, 6 - 8PM, Casa Italiana

This course is designed for true beginners, those with no previous knowledge of Italian. The goal of this course is to enable students to acquire a basic mastery of the following five language skills: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and intercultural competence. The course will emphasize practice of grammar and communication skills in the classroom.

Level II - Stio, Mondays, 6 - 8PM, Casa Italiana

This course is designed for individuals with some experience with the language. The goal of this course is to enable students to acquire an intermediate (low) mastery of the following five language skills: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and intercultural competence. The course will emphasize practice of grammar and communication skills in the classroom.

Level III - Stio, Wednesdays, 6 - 8PM, Casa Italiana

This course is designed for individuals with some experience with the language. The goal of this course is to enable students to acquire an intermediate (high) mastery of the following five language skills: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and intercultural competence.

At the end of this course, you will be able to:

- Understand and apply the grammar rules covered in the semester.

- Read and understand passages in Italian that will gradually become more challenging.

- Write short compositions in Italian in line with the acquisition of more vocabulary as the course progresses.

- Listen to native speakers and understand the gist of what is being said, starting from very basic exchanges to more complex speeches.

- Communicate in Italian at an intermediate level, formulate your presentations of different subjects presented in the course and answer elementary questions.

- Show knowledge of the cultural aspects of the Italian-speaking world, as presented in the course.

Level IV - Morano, Tuesdays, 6 - 8PM, ZOOM & in person

This course expands on the language skills mastered in Livello I, Livello II, Livello III. There will be a review of basic and complex grammatical and pronunciation patterns, intensive vocabulary expansion through literary and non-literary readings, and extensive conversation and writing practice.

Level V Italian Literature - Dr. Vitti-Alexander, Thursdays, 6 - 8PM, ZOOM

This course provides a comprehensive study of major Italian literary works across different historical periods. A new author will be introduced every semester. Their work(s) will be presented within their cultural and historical contexts, often with a focus on themes like love, politics, social commentary, and the human condition, while considering the evolution of the Italian language and literary forms. Readings may be in Italian, in English translation or in both depending on the author.

Italian for Travelers - Speciale, Thursdays, 6 - 8PM, Casa Italiana

This course is meant specifically for students who would like to go abroad to Italy at some point in the future. The content included in this course requires much speaking and pronunciation practice.
