They鈥檝e already been immortalized as members of the Nazareth Sports Hall of Fame, but the Golden Flyers鈥 1992 men鈥檚 lacrosse team reached yet another level of notoriety in August as one of 16 inductees into the Frontier Field Walk of Fame.
Since 1997, a special section at the center of the Walk of Fame has been designated to Rochester sports legends. These individuals (including fans, management, players, and media) are those who have made an impact on the community through their achievements in the Rochester-area sports scene.
A handful of former players and coaches showed up for the official ceremony on August 25 prior to a Rochester Red Wings baseball game. The 1992 team, which finished 14-1 overall and captured the College鈥檚 first NCAA Division III championship, was recognized in the Team for the Ages category and had a brick placed in the stadium Walk of Fame area.
鈥淚t鈥檚 a pretty big deal,鈥 says Rob Randall 鈥88, Nazareth鈥檚 current head coach and an assistant on the 鈥92 team. 鈥淭hat team accomplished something that will be difficult to replicate. It鈥檚 a great honor to be included in a group of so many Rochester legends.鈥
Nazareth is well represented in the Walk of Fame. Among the members are former athletic director Bill Carey, former basketball standout Jeff Van Gundy 鈥85, former swim coach Rick Aronberg, former men鈥檚 soccer coach Doug May, former men鈥檚 lacrosse coach Scott Nelson (who coached the 鈥92 team), former women鈥檚 volleyball coach Linda Downey, and her daughter, three-time volleyball All-American Christa Downey 鈥03, and current equipment manager Michael Palermo.
