Fulbright Application Process

U.S. Student Program (for Current Students)

Who's eligible: Students with a strong academic record who are U.S. citizens and want to spend a year studying or teaching in a foreign country after graduation.

When to apply: Begin the application process in the fall of your junior year. Applications go through several drafts and are submitted to a Campus Review Committee before going to a Fulbright National Screening Committee in October of your senior year for consideration.

Prepare to apply: 

  • For a research grant, you submit a proposal to undertake a specific project in your own field of study, to work in conjunction with a university in the country to which you apply. You're expected to have a strong academic record in coursework related to your project field. 
  • Or pursue an English teaching award.

Language ability: Some Fulbright awards require knowledge of the local language, but many don't.

When do I go: Fulbright experiences take place during the year following graduation.

U.S. Scholar Program (for Current Faculty and Staff)

There are five Fulbright short-term and long-term programs available for faculty and professionals:

  • Traditional Fulbright Scholars Program
  • Fulbright Senior Specialist Program
  • Fulbright Distinguished Chairs Program
  • Fulbright International Education Administrators Program
  • Fulbright German Studies Seminars

To apply, faculty and professionals must be U.S. citizens with a Ph.D. or equivalent professional/terminal degree and must have college or university teaching experience. Programs are available for research, lectures, or both. Some programs require foreign language proficiency. Applicants submit a project statement, a curriculum vitae, and three letters of recommendation. A letter of invitation may be necessary. Application deadlines vary by program.
